Proper Lumber Storage: Protect Your Investment

Proper storage can mean the difference between premium lumber and expensive firewood. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment from the moment of delivery.

Outdoor Storage Rules 1. **Elevate from ground** - Use bearers at least 150mm high 2. **Sticker properly** - Place 25mm stickers between every layer, aligned vertically 3. **Cover the top** - Waterproof sheeting over the stack, but NOT wrapping the sides 4. **Allow air circulation** - Leave gaps between stacks 5. **Orient correctly** - Stack perpendicular to prevailing wind

Indoor Storage - Maintain consistent temperature and humidity - Allow lumber to acclimatize for 2-3 weeks before interior use - Store flat on a level surface to prevent warping

Seasonal Considerations - **Winter delivery:** Bring indoors gradually to prevent thermal shock - **Summer storage:** Extra ventilation critical to prevent mold - **Rainy season:** Ensure drainage around storage area

Warning Signs of Poor Storage - Blue-gray discoloration (mold) - End-grain checking (too fast drying) - Visible warping or cupping - Musty odor
